Millbank Prison - Atterbury Street

Erection date: 1998

Inscription

This historic bollard was presented by the City of Westminster to the Royal Army Medical Corps to mark its centenary in 1998. The bollard originally stood at the head of the river steps opposite Millbank Prison on the site of which the Royal Army Medical College was built and from where until 1867 prisoners sentenced to transportation embarked on their journey to Australia.

Site: Millbank Prison - Atterbury Street (1 memorial)

SW1, Atterbury Street

There are two (well, we've only found two) of these giant bollards commemorating Millbank Prison and the transportation of prisoners.  See nearby Riverside Walk for the other one.  You'll have noticed that this neat courtyard also hosts Henry Moore's 'Two piece reclining figure No.1, 1959'.

Site now occupied by Chelsea College of Arts.
