Plaque

Miller & Penrose

Inscription

English Heritage
Lee Miller, 1907 - 1977, photographer and Sir Roland Penrose, 1900 - 1984, surrealist, lived here.

Unveiled by Sir David Hare (planning a film about Lee Miller) and Antony Penrose (the couple's son). Hare had been commissioned to write the screenplay but we subsequently found a quote (pre-2005) from Penrose saying that project had "skidded to a halt in a shower of gravel" when Kidman separated from Cruise.

Site: Miller & Penrose (1 memorial)

NW3, Downshire Hill, 21

In 1937 Penrose commissioned a Henry Moore sculpture, Mother and Child, and placed it in the front garden of this house. The neighbours hated it. They found even the abstract nudity offensive.
