On the declaration of war, Nancy's Fascist sister Unity had shot herself in the head, but survived and returned to England where her mother looked after her. She was well enough to travel around but partially disabled, like a stroke victim. She often visited her sister Nancy in this shop. Source: Unity Mitford: A Quest by David Pryce-Jones.

Site: Nancy Mitford (1 memorial)

W1, Curzon Street, 10

Nancy Mitford worked at the bookshop which was founded here in 1936 by Heywood Hill. It is now (2002) owned by the Duke of Devonshire, her brother-in-law, who himself funds the annual literary Heywood Hill Prize, which recognizes a lifetime's work. It is thought by some to be the snootiest bookshop in London.
