Plaque

Olof Palme

Inscription

Dedicated to the memory of Olof Palme, leader of the Swedish Social Democratic Party, politician, statesman and Prime Minister. January 1927 - February 1986

Site: Olof Palme (1 memorial)

N15, Tottenham Green East

Presumably Tottenham has, or had, some special connection with Palme or Sweden but we can't find it.

When we published this Stephen Brasher quickly contacted us to say "That part of the Green was created as a 'Peace Garden' in 1985 and dedicated to Palme once he had been murdered." And: "I don't think there was a particular relationship , just that Palme was a leading Social Democrat politician who appealed to the Labour run council (Haringey rather than Tottenham at this point - Haringey was a merger of Tottenham, Hornsey and Wood Green in the 1964 London borough amalgamations). I was a Haringey councillor for twelve years, but after the garden was created (I served 1990-2002). During the 80s the borough was quite often having peace festivals, creating gardens and in common with other boroughs declaring itself a nuclear free zone."

That is very helpful. We note that the plaque does not name its erector, which is unusual when that party is the local council. Possibly it was privately created and Haringey was happy to offer the garden in which to display it.
