WC1, Store Street, 33, Treadwell’s Books

We learnt about this basement fireplace at .

On our first visit we were told the space was not currently accessible to the public. We had better luck on our second visit in 2023 when William kindly showed us downstairs and gave us some of the background. About 10 years ago the fireplace, which had been in Smith's home in Cornwall, needed to be removed.  If no one took it then it would just be destroyed so the bookshop took it. William was part of the moving team and reported that it was extremely heavy. They first moved it into the shop, but it was obtrusive on the ground floor so, with difficulty they moved it down into its current position in the basement, where it sits very nicely.

has "Pamela Colman Smith lived in Parc Garland (Cornwall) for many years Her sitting room was dominated {by} a large stone fireplace in art deco style which she'd purchased in London and had transported down, to serve as her home's hearth. Now, due to a miracle instigated by (and thanks to) Madeleine LeDespencer, Treadwells has inherited this fireplace. Parc Garland is undergoing renovation."

is a lovely shop, specialising in magic, the occult, and witchcraft. They hold related events including tarot readings.
