Peace Crane

Erection date: 27/4/1983

Inscription

{On the plinth:}
???? people
Grow in peace
??? friends

A photo on a nearby information board shows the statue surrounded by children and with a plaque on the front. We believe that the plaque tells the story of Sadako. It also looks as though the plinth was originally in a different location.

Site: Maygrove Peace Park (8 memorials)

NW6, Maygrove Road, Maygrove Peace Park

The park was built on former railway sidings and opened on 27 April 1983, nearly 38 years after the dropping of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It contains a cherry tree, which commemorates the one that continued to bloom after the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima.

The (non-memorial, as far as we can tell) sculpture sitting on the boulder is called Untitled (Listening) (1983-4), and was sculpted by Antony Gormley, so he was probably the model as well. The inscribed stones are laid into the tarmac path near the sculpture.
