Princess Alice Memorial
In memory of all those who lost their lives in the tragic sinking of the Princess Alice paddle steamer off Creeksmouth {sic}, on 3rd September 1878.
Also, with grateful remembrance of the residents of Creeksmouth Village, who helped in the rescue attempts.
Approximately 700 people lost their lives in the disaster.
May they all rest in peace.

This is definitely not a memorial to be stumbled on by accident. We knew roughly where it was, (near the end of a relatively pleasant riverside walk, in spite of all the light industry and scrap metal units that surround it). It is only a few feet from the pathway, but too overgrown to be seen. We found it by clambering up a bank and then struggling down through the foliage. It is supposedly surrounded by masses of daffodils in spring, (which wasn't much help when we visited in June!).
