{On the front of the plinth in gilded lettering:}
Victoria R.I. 1896 {for "Victoria Regina Imperatrix" Latin, meaning: Victoria, Queen Empress"

{On the back, main section of the plinth:}
Presented to the citizens of London by Sir Alfred Seale Haslam in token of friendship to themselves and loyalty to Her Majesty Queen Victoria.
