The building, opened in 1921, was designed by (who also designed the Limehouse Mission Building). It was built as a WW1 memorial and also a social club for the YMCA and YWCA, with a swimming pool in the basement, a billiard room, a theatre and a lounge on the ground floor, a gymnasium on the first, and reading rooms on the top floors.
have photos showing that King George V and Queen Mary attended the opening ceremony on 4 June 1921. John H. Silley also attended.
A red triangle is part of the YMCA symbol.
It operated successfully until WW2 and closed 1956. By the 1970s it was being used as offices. At some point it housed part of the Art and Design Department of the University of East London. By 2010 the interior and rear were demolished and converted into flats. The facade was restored.
