Reel sculpture - Gainsborough Film Studios

Erection date: 1996

Site: Reel sculpture - Gainsborough studios (1 memorial)

N1, Shoreditch Park

Commissioned by Hackney Council in 1996 when it was erected at the junction of Leonard Street and Paul Street, EC2. Some time July 2012 - July 2014 it was moved from there and by July 2014 it was re-erected here (Isn't Google Street View amazing?).

The sculpture represents a giant reel for celluloid film. The Gainsborough building is on the northern edge of this park so this location makes sense. We cannot explain the filmic significance of the Paul Street junction - we don't think Paul Street was named for Robert W. Paul.
