Robert Peel - Embankment

Inscription

{On the plinth:}
Sir Robert Peel (1788 - 1850)

{On the wall behind:}
The police are the public and the public are the police.
Taken from the Peelian principles.

The Peelian principles summarise the ideas that Sir Robert Peel developed to define an ethical police force. The approach expressed in these principles is commonly known as 'policing by consent'.

Site: Robert Peel - Embankment (1 memorial)

SW1, Victoria Embankment, New Scotland Yard

From the we learn that this 1851 bust was found in 2017 hidden away in a box under a staircase at New Scotland Yard (St James's) when the Met were moving from there to this building, previously known as Curtis Green. Not the way to treat a former PM and your founder, but they've done him proud now with this large, purpose-built, crown-topped, display case.
