Rose and Crown pub

Erection date: 1887

Inscription

1787 - 1887

The painted plaster rose and crown are rather lovely but the numbers, especially the 7s, lack any elegance.

We think the pub was rebuilt in 1887 - Victoria's Golden Jubilee year so royalty was in vogue - and that at the time they had some evidence that the pub had existed in 1787.

SE1, Colombo Street, 47, Rose and Crown pub

The surrounding architecture is not doing this old-timer any favours. We like seeing pubs with their name integrated into the architecture: a lion, a red barrel or, as in this case, roses and a crown. These pubs are Victorian - people then had confidence in the future and had never heard of slugs and lettuces.
