Plaque

Samuel Morley

Inscription

1809 - 1886. This tablet records the purchase by subscription of the Royal Victoria Hall (The Old Vic.) in 1888 as a memorial to the work of Samuel Morley.

Despite the dates on it this plaque looks to us to be quite a modern creation. The story of Morley's financial support for the Old Vic and Morley College is too complex to put on a plaque and this inscription gives a rather garbled version. We give a brief summary of the story on our page for Emma Cons, who founded both the theatre and the college.

Site: The Old Vic (3 memorials)

SE1, The Cut, Old Vic Theatre

The Royal Coburg plaque is just around the corner to the left, on the flank wall. The large Cons plaque is over at the right, curving around the corner partly hidden by the lamppost. And the Morley plaque is around the corner to the right, on the Waterloo Road flank wall, above a back entrance, towards the southern end of the building.
