Sergeant Ray Holmes

Erection date: 2022

Inscription

This plaque has been erected in grateful recognition by No 504 (County of Nottingham) Squadron Royal Auxiliary Air Force to commemorate the actions of Sergeant Ray Holmes (1914 - 2005).
On 15 September 1940 Sergeant Holmes rammed a German bomber that was en route to bomb Buckingham Palace. Sergeant Holmes' Hurricane crashed at the junction of Ebury Bridge Road and Buckingham Palace Road.

The aircraft (P2725) was excavated in 2003 and Ray was present when the engine block was retrieved.

"Never was so much owed by so many to so few."

This plaque arrived some time June/Aug 2022. On site it's not possible to get close enough to read it with the naked eye.
