Plaque

(lost) Sigmund Freud - lost

Erection date: 1956

Inscription

Sigmund Freud, 1856 - 1939, founder of psychoanalysis, lived here in 1938-39.
London County Council

The first plaque commemorating Freud at 20 Maresfield Gardens was erected by the London County Council and unveiled by his daughter Anna in 1956, celebrating the 100th anniversary of his birth. Issues with the usual plaque manufacturer at the time forced the LCC to utilise an inferior surface-mounted enamelled steel plaque. When it was decided to commemorate Anna Freud at the same address in 2002, the opportunity was taken by English Heritage to also replace Sigmund's steel LCC plaque with a matching one of the traditional ceramic type, with almost identical wording.
