Monument

Sir Arthur Sullivan

Erection date: 1903

Inscription

{A semi-circular stone in front of the monument reads:}
1842 Arthur Sullivan 1900

{On the back of the pedestal, inscribed in the stone, from The Yeomen of the Guard:}
"Is life a boon? If so, it must befall that Death, whene'er he call, must call too soon". W. S. Gilbert.

{The sheet music is open at the page of the score showing the same words.}

{The mandolin is inscribed:}
W. Goscombe John. A. R. A. 1903.

Leaning against the pedestal there is a crying woman. The guitar, score and mask of Pan indicate that she represents Music, and isn't just a sexy, topless Art Nouveau floozy. Amongst statue aficionados this is reckoned the sexiest statue in London.
