{On a brass plaque attached to the front of the brick plinth there is a drawing of the Crystal Palace and:}
Sir Joseph Paxton M.P., 1803 - 1865, creator of the Crystal Palace which stood near this site from 1854 - 1936.

From : "Donated by public subscription and unveiled at a Fete in June 1873, this was to mark the 20th year of the Palace and to show appreciation for the master architect. The bust originally looked towards the Palace building over the central pool (now the car park) but has been re-sited and turned to survey the park." It actually sits in the car park.
