Sir Leonard Hutton - plaque

Inscription

Sir Leonard Hutton, who scored 364 runs for England against Australia in the Oval test match of 1938, was a prime mover in the 1988 "save the Oval" appeal campaign.
This sculpture by Walter Ritchie was commissioned by Surrey CCC on behalf of the many donors to the appeal.

The "save the Oval" campaign was not, as we first thought, made necessary by a threat to replace the ground with flats, but was an appeal which brought (in the form of £1,000 bricks) the sponsorship to enable renovations of the facilities at the grounds. So a brick sculpture to commemorate Hutton is very appropriate.

We'd guess that the diagram plaque was created soon after the record-breaking innings and had been on display elsewhere until it was moved here to complement the brick sculpture.
