This fountain was erected by Miss Crump of Hereford House in memory of her cousin Wm. Warburton Pearce Esqre. who died March 1st 1872.

A Facebook contact gave us some additional information about the people mentioned here - see Ann Crump's entry for this. The census returns suggest that Crump, Pearce and Chamberlain shared a household for over 30 years. See Chamberlain's page to see what a crime magnet he was.

NW3, South End Green
South End Green used to be a green and it used to be twice the size it is now, with carts, etc. having to go around the edge. But the tram arrived in 1885 and its route just sliced through the middle of the green. Which was the beginning of the traffic take-over.
One half of the old green is now basically a large traffic island with some plants and this ornate fountain. Following extensive renovations in 2007 the fountain provided water for the first time in 20 years. But in 2014 we read that the Council had decided that maintenance is too expensive and it will be turned off. That's OK - we can all buy plastic bottles of water instead, no problem, not wasteful at all. Now the South End Green Association is to maintain the fountain.
2021: Once again the fountain is being cleaned and restored. This time, although they would like the water to flow again, the campaigners are more focussed on the island being less traffic-bound and thus more accessible to children etc. so it can be used by the community.
