EC4, Fruiterer's Passage

The new pedestrian subway under the northern approach to Southwark Bridge was formally opened on 19 January 2000 by the unveiling of a small steel plaque. We believe there always was a pedestrian subway but it was probably grim and smelly before this millennial refurb. The passage zig-zags its way under the road and the middle section is meticulously tiled with copies of historic images of the bridge. The dividing ceramic piers are miniature versions of those on the 1921 bridge itself.

Walking east, before you go through the rather stunning tunnel, you pass through a pair of metal gates. Behind the one on your right is a street sign, 'Fruiterers Passage' and below that is the small steel plaque.

The hidden uplighters in the tunnel give it a special atmosphere and on our visit the sun was creating a strange, ghostly reflection of the people approaching the tunnel from the other end.
