St james's Garden - people of London - stone

Inscription

The garden in this bomb damaged site was given by Viscount Southwood to commemorate the courage and fortitude of the people of London in the Second World War 1939-1945.

In a 1946 one sees that the Garden of Remembrance was in quite a small part of the courtyard, where the trees to the east of the gate now are. And it was given by "the late Lord Southwood on behalf of the Daily Herald".

Site: St James's Piccadilly (4 memorials)

W1, Piccadilly

Standing in Piccadilly one sees 4 memorials on the wall: from left to right: Sotheran Fountain, Garden, Lyttelton Fountain, Railings. There are 3 more memorials in the garden.

The building on Piccadilly, to the east of the garden is the Parish Offices. A plaque in the broken pediment above the door is inscribed in Latin, which translates as "To the glory of the people's safety after the fire of the war the buildings were rebuilt AD 1956."
