St Marys Sports and Social Club - WW2 memorial

Inscription

The clock in the tower above was repaired and renovated after damage by enemy action by members and friends of St Mary's Sports and Social Club in memory of the following members of the church and club who made the supreme sacrifice in defence of freedom during the world war 1939 - 1945: {8 names in alphabetical sequence}
"At the going down of the sun and in the morning we will rememeber them."

Site: St Marys Sports and Social Club - WW2 memorial (1 memorial)

SW12, Balham High Road, St Mary and St John the Divine

The plaque is at the base of the tower. Our colleague Andrew Behan, has researched all the names on the memorial.

A gives: This chapel opened in 1808 and was extended in 1824, 1882 and  1885. In 1903 the front facing the High Road, with clock tower, belfry, domed baptistery and lobbies, was built and that's what we see today. "1937: The church had a very active Sports & Social Club around this time. 1941: The church only suffered minor damage during World War II. Two incendiaries landed on the north transept roof and the balcony window was destroyed."
