St Marys Stoke Newington war memorial

Inscription

{4 of the faces on the octagonal base are carved with laurel wreaths. The other faces carry inscriptions all made difficult to read by weathering:}

I sent you out with mourning and weeping but God will give you to me again with joy and gladness forever.

God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life.

This cross is dedicated to the glory of God and in memory of the men from this parish who fell in the great war 1914 – 1919.

{and lower down below that inscription:}

And in the war of 1939 – 1945.

On site we thought there were only 2 inscriptions but gives the text of 3. It seems likely that the 4th face also carried text originally.

The "I sent..." quote comes from 'Fourth Baruch' which is, apparently, a pseudepigraphical text of the Old Testament. It's not part of the Bible, but gets quoted as if it were.

"God so loved..." is from John 3:16.

quotes Hackney and Kingsland Gazette (23 February 1920) as saying that the architect for the proposed war memorial was the grandson of the architect of the church. That being Sir George Gilbert Scott we cleverly deduce that the memorial was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott.
