St Saviour's war memorial

Erection date: 1922

Inscription

{Left of plinth beneath a plaque depicting bi-planes:}
This memorial was erected by the parishioners of Saint Saviour's Southwark in the year 1922.

{Right of plinth, beneath a plaque depicting battleships at sea:}
Give honour to the men of St. Saviours Southwark who gave their lives for the empire 1914 - 1918. Their names are inscribed within the parish church. May their memory live for ever in the minds of men.

The bronze statue on the plinth is of an infantryman tramping through mud. The front of the plinth shows a soldier in classical costume and the rear has a mourning woman with a naked child and a bird (probably a dove). The left hand plaque of the plinth has fallen off and is being renovated (October 2012).
