Stonebridge Park bus depot war memorial

Site: Stonebridge Park bus depot war memorial (1 memorial)

NW10, Brentfield

This memorial was brought to our notice by our colleage Jamie Davis.  He found the photo of the memorial behind the bus on  and copied us with this 2014 correspondence from Mike Beamish: "The old Stonebridge (or Stonebridge Park to give its full name) depot was originally a tram depot for Metropolitan Electric Tramways and passed to the new London Transport in 1933. The trams were replaced by trolleybuses which ran from there 1936-1962 after which it operated as a motor bus garage until closed, I think in the eighties or nineties." We thank Mike for permission to use his photo.

With that information we set ourselves to finding the location of the depot and the memorial.  By becoming swivel-chair archaeologists we found not just the depot but, to our delight, the ghost of the monument as well.   At the top of our image is a  showing the building to the right of of Mike's photo. Now look at the lower Satellite View and at the centre you can see a vague square in the ground between the building and the pavement - that's the mark left by the monument. Just amazing that it's still there and hasn't had something built on it.

Since locating the original location of the memorial we learnt that it was not lost, but moved - to Queen Elizabeth Gardens in Barham Park Wembley and can be seen on Remembrance Sunday 2012. We have not yet got out to Wembley to finally track it down - watch this space.
