Site: Westminster Hospital Medical School (1 memorial)

SW1, Horseferry Road, 7

The plaque marks the old entrance to the medical school when it was at 17 Horseferry Road in this building.

has a drawing of this building together with the nearby hospital, on an announcement of the opening date, 20 April 1939, which also includes an appeal for funds to complete the construction.

From : Dr Christopher Everett, who graduated from Westminster Medical School in 1960 is quoted saying: "At the other end of the medical school was the Queen Mary Nurses' Home, and across St John's Garden was the towering Westminster Hospital building: all three were connected by a tunnel for convenience in the rain and is now closed." Everyone loves a hidden tunnel. For more see William Lyttle, the Mole man.

We'd like to know more about the between the first and second floor windows. They are in the same style as the similarly attached to the south elevation around the central first floor window.  The southern section of the building was built as Westminster Hospital Nurses Home, The Queen Mary Nurses' Home, as is still indicated on the frieze above what, presumably was the main entrance.

The way these panels are not integrated into the (very simple) decorative scheme of the facades suggests that they are architectural items salvaged from another building, probably closely related to the Westminster Hospital, and attached after the 1939 building was completed. The style of all these panels is quite modern.

We see that the hospital's previous site, at Broad Sanctuary, was substantially refurbished in 1924. The building itself was the quite Gothic edifice shown on our page for the hospital but perhaps the 1924 refurbishment included some extensions which incorporated these panels. The hospital buildings at Broad Sanctuary were demolished in 1950 after a fire, so perhaps that's when the panels were salvaged and erected on this 1939 building.
