E1, Mile End Road, Mile End Waste

This stretch of grass and trees is known as Mile End Waste or Verge. It is one of the remnants of a large common area known variously as Mile End Green or Stepney Green which once ran from here eastwards across what is now Stepney Green and Stepney Green Park to St Dunstan's church. See our entry for Booth to understand the significance of the Waste to Booth and the Salvation Army.
