The plaque was unveiled by actor/singer Peter Straker and the Reverend Michael King, son of Sam King.

The Windrush docked at Tilbury and Paddington seems to us an odd station to connect to that port in the Thames estuary, way over to the east. Indeed, the recommended that we use Fenchurch Street Station.

explains that  other ships, such as Straker's, bringing the 'Windrush generation' docked at Plymouth. From Plymouth most travellers would take the train to Paddington from where they would travel on to their destinations such as Brixton, Clapham, Notting Hill and Bristol to begin a new life. One recruitment scheme which encouraged people from the Caribbean to travel and work in Britain was London Transport.
