Woking Martian Cylinder

Inscription

"After the glimpse I had of the Martians emerging from the cylinder in which they had come to the earth from their planet, a kind of fascination paralysed my actions. I remained standing knee-deep in the heather, staring at the mound that hid them".
This 'alien pod' is part of the Martian sculpture designed by Michael Condron. It reflects the cylinder described by H. G. Wells in The War of the Worlds and can be seen here ploughing into the ground.
You can visit the Martians' landing site on nearby Horsell Common by downloading the Wells in Woking trail from www.celebratewoking.info

The web address no longer has Wells' material on it, but the reported on the 2016 Woking celebrations of the  150th anniversary of his birth.
