Plaque

Woodford telephone exchange

Erection date: 1938

Inscription

King George VI 1938

Plaques are often not perfectly straight but for this one we really had to decide whether to show the wall or the plaque squiffy - we went with the plaque.

Site: Woodford telephone exchange (1 memorial)

IG8, Snakes Lane West, 4, British Telecom

The plaque is above the door's bricked-in fanlight.

We found this address on a , as "WFT-IG Woodford TE". We are fascinated by the domestic style and scale of the buildings facing the street compared with those behind. This is best seen in .

Telephone exchanges seem to be on their way out so it is heartening to know that there are groups who produce websites such as .  This has/is aiming to have a photo of every exchange. Sadly, for our purposes, it does not name the architects.

The date of the buildings is probably the 1938 given on the plaque. We can't see that it refers to anything else: the king having been crowned the year before.
