Ypres WW1 milestone

Erection date: 8/10/1922

Inscription

{Front panel:}
7 miles to Dartford.

{Side panel:}
8 miles to London Bridge.

{Rear panel:}
130 miles to Ypres
In defending the salient our casualties were:
90,000 killed
70,500 missing
410,000 wounded.

The Ypres panel on the milestone is very close to a hedge making it difficult to get a photograph.

The milestone dates from the 18th century and was moved to the churchyard where the Ypres panel was added. The other two panels look relatively modern, so probably were added at the same time. We have found a reference which says that the current Ypres panel replaces one that was stolen. It also mentions another panel giving the distance to Ypres Cloth Hall. This is no longer here, but possibly was on the now blank face of the milestone.
