Air Marshal Lord Hugh Montague Trenchard

Founder of the Royal Air Force. Born Somerset. Aged 20 joined the Second Battalion of the Royal Scots Fusiliers and served in India, in the Boer War and in Nigeria. Learnt to fly in 1912 and served in the Royal Flying Corps in WW1. Became the first Chief of the Air Staff in 1919 and went on to found the RAF.

After retiring from the RAF he became Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police 1931-5 and founded the Hendon Police College.
