Alexander Glegg

Born Scotland, trained as an engineer and came to London in 1870. Mayor of Wandsworth 1905-6. Instrumental in the creation of the Tooting Bathing Lake, now Tooting Bec Lido. He donated the Clapham Cross clock tower to the Parish of Clapham, then a part of the Borough of Wandsworth. Director or chair of many worthy organisations, many religious, such as the British and Foreign Bible Society, or educational, or health related.

Knighted in 1930. Died at home in Wimbledon Park.
