Peter James Henry Benenson was born as Peter James Henry Solomon on 31 July 1921 in London, the son of Brigadier General Harold Josiah Solomon (1886-1930) and Flora Solomon MBE née Benenson (1895-1984). His birth was registered in the 3rd quarter of 1921 in the St George Hanover Square Registration District, London.

He changed his surname to Benenson in later life. Having been educated at Eton and Balliol Colleges he served during World War Two in the Intelligence Corps, service number 7942781, at Bletchley Park, Buckinghamshire, rising to the rank of Warrant Officer Class 1 and was awarded the Defence Medal and the British War Medal 1939-1945.

His gives much information about this man including that as a barrister he was a co-founder of Amnesty International.

He married Margaret Susan Anderson (1917-2004) in the 3rd quarter of 1941 in the Westminster Registration District, London and they had two children: Susan Natasha Benenson (b.1947) and Jill F. Benenson (b.1949). They divorced in 1972 and he was remarried to Susan E. Booth in the 3rd quarter of 1973 in the Westmoreland South Registration District, Westmoreland (now Cumbria). They had two children: Manya Lucy Benenson (b.1975) and Joachim James A. Benenson (b.1977).

His last address was 38 Nuneham Courtenay, Oxfordshire OX44 9NY and he died, aged 83 years from pneumonia at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford. His body was , Nuneham Courtenay.

He is shown as 'ALDERMAN • P•J•H•BENENSON • Vice - Chaiman' on foundation stones at both James Middleton House, Middleton Street, London, E2 and Stafford Cripps House, Globe Road, London, E2.
