Awarded the VC for his heroism on 25 March – 24 April 1918, age 20, while serving in the Duke of Cambridge’s Own (Middlesex Regiment). "On a number of occasions he seized the initiative and restored a critical situation. His valour and skilful leading throughout this prolonged period was most conspicuous.
