Prince Andrew Albert Christian Edward Windsor was born on 19 February 1960, the third child of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, in the Belgian Suite of Buckingham Palace. He joined the Royal Navy and saw active service as a helicopter pilot in the Falklands War of 1982.
Upon his marriage to Sarah Ferguson on 23 July 1986 he was created The Duke of York, Earl of Inverness and Baron Killyleagh, and assumed the style 'His Royal Highness The Duke of York'. They had two children: Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrice Elizabeth Mary of York (b.1988).and Her Royal Highness Princess Eugenie Victoria Helena of York (b.1990). His marriage ended in divorce in 1996.
Our gives much information about this man and confirms that following allegations of improper conduct and his association with Jeffrey Epstein (1953-2019), an American convicted paedophile, his mother removed his military affiliations and patronages and he ceased using the style 'His Royal Highness'.
On 3 November 2025 letters patent were issued removing his style of 'Royal Highness' and the title "Prince". As a result of him losing his royal title, his surname changed to Mountbatten-Windsor in accordance with a declaration made by his mother on 8 February 1960 that this surname would apply to all male-line descendants who do not hold the style of Royal Highness or the title of Prince/Princess.
He is shown as 'HRH THE DUKE OF YORK CVO ADC' on the plaque attached to the base of the World Cup Winners 1966 statue at the junction of Barking Road and Green Street, London, E6.
