Antoine Watteau

Artist. Born Jean-Antoine Watteau in Valenciennes. In 1702, he moved to Paris and worked as a scene painter at the Opera. He is credited with inventing the genre of 'fêtes galantes', which shows scenes of bucolic and idyllic charm.
