Civil engineer and shipbuilder.

An Indian Parsi from the Wadia ship building family. The first Indian elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. Introduced several novel technologies to the city of Bombay (now Mumbai), including gas lighting, the sewing machine, steam pump-driven irrigation and electro-plating. Thought to be the first Parsi to have visited America, in 1851.

First visited London in 1839 to further study marine engineering. During his first year he was presented to Queen Victoria. He then travelled regularly between Bombay and London. In 1868, he returned to England permanently, spending the last 10 years of his life with his British family at the house in Richmond with the plaque, where he died.
