Statesman. Born Aretas Akers in West Malling, Kent. He added 'Douglas' to his name in accordance with a request in a relative's will (surprisingly common - see William Burdett-Coutts for other examples). First entered parliament in 1880 and was Home Secretary July 1902 - December 1905, when he left government. In 1911 he was created Viscount Chilston and Baron Douglas of Baads.
