Metropolitan Streets Act

Inscription

City of London Police District
30th & 31st Vic. Cap. 134. Sec. 10.
By virtue of the Metropolitan Streets Act 1867, I, the Commissioner of Police for the City of London and the Liberties thereof, do by this my order direct that this street be deemed to be within the special limits of the said act.
Approved A. Akers Douglas, one of His Majesty's principal secretaries of state.
W. N-Bower Commr. of Police of the City of London

{We've reconstructed the last 2 lines so they may not be exactly right.}

The sign is badly worn at the bottom. There may originally have been many similar signs around the city but this is the only surviving one we've found. It must have been erected after January 1901, as it refers to 'His Majesty'. Nott-Bowers served a long term as Commissioner starting in March 1902 but Akers-Douglas was only Home Secretary August 1902 - December 1905, so the plaque was erected sometime during his three and a half year term.
