Arnold Bennett

Born 92 (then 90) Hope Street, Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent. The "Five Towns" in his novels are based on this area, "the Potteries" as it was in his youth.
Some would have called him a "champagne socialist" but he considered himself a socialist and was s a trustee of the left-wing magazine New Statesman. He was also a director of the Savoy Hotel, where the omelette "Arnold Bennett" was created. The titular "Grand Babylon Hotel" was partly modelled on the Savoy. He lived in Paris for many years. Died of typhoid. His ashes are buried in Burslem Cemetery, Stoke.

2022: We read in the that 1889-90 Bennett lived at 46 Alexandra Road N8, and the nearby passage, Arnold Bennett Way, is named in his honour.
