Our colleague Andrew Behan has kindly researched this man: Assistant Machinist Herbertus Marinus Boender was born on 13 November 1916 in Palembang, South Sumatra, Indonesia. He was an Assistant Machinist (i.e. an Assistant Engineer) serving aboard the MV Abbekerk. On 7 September 1940, the Abbekerk was bombed and sunk during a German air raid on London. The ship was later raised, repaired and returned to service in March 1941. Boender survived this attack but died, aged 24 years, on 10 March 1941 as a result of accident whilst the ship was berthed at Shed 4, King George V Dock, North Woolwich, London. On 13 March 1941 he was buried in Plot R.4638 at the Tower Hamlets Cemetery, Southern Grove, Bow and is commemorated there on Panel 16 of the War Memorial Screen.
