Inventor, industrial archaeologist, leading figure in patent reform and the first clerk to the commissioners of patents. Born Lancashire. Appointed professor of machinery at University College London in 1847. Much of the collection of early industrial devices at the South Kensington Museum (now the V&A) is due to him.
