Bernard Cyril Freyberg, VC

Soldier and administrator. Born Bernard Cyril Freyberg in Richmond, Surrey. He spent his early life in New Zealand, and at the outbreak of WWI enlisted in Britain and fought in Gallipoli and France. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions at Beaumont Hamel. In WWII he was given command of the New Zealand forces in the middle east. After the war he was Governor-General of New Zealand from 1946 to 1952. Died in Windsor. 

Awarded the VC for his heroism on 13-14 November 1916, age 27, while serving in the Queen’s (Royal West Surrey Regiment). "He inspired all with his personality, valour and utter contempt for danger leading the assault – many prisoners were captured, enabling the position to be held. (Beaucourt-sur-l’Ancre, France)".
