Known by everyone as Bobby Charlton (though he became Sir Robert Charlton, CBE) he was a football player and manager. Born in Ashington, Northumberland. Brother of Jack Charlton. He played principally for Manchester United and went on to manage Preston North End. He survived the 1958 Munich air disaster in which eight members of the Manchester United team were killed. Played in the winning England team in the 1966 World Cup. Famous wearer of the 'comb over' hairstyle.
He was made an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire , Civil Division, (OBE) in the for services to Association Football and made a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, Civil Division, (CBE) in the , again for services to Association Football. He was created a Knight Bachelor in the for services to sport, particularly Association Football.
His and the confirm that he died, aged 86 years, on 21 October 2023, at Macclesfield General Hospital, Victoria Road, Macclesfield, SK10 3BL. His funeral service took place at Manchester Cathedral on 13 November 2023.
