Bobby Moore

Footballer. Born Robert Frederick Chelsea Moore in Upney Hospital, Barking, Essex. Played for West Ham 1958-74. He had already played for the England youth and under-twenty-threes teams before being selected for the main squad in 1962. He was made captain of the England team in 1963 and famously led the team to victory in the 1966 World Cup. He died at his home, 12 Seaton Close, Putney, his life cut short by cancer. Such was his esteem, that a memorial service for him was held in Westminster Abbey, and a statue erected at the rebuilt Wembley Stadium in 2007.
