Brian Lawrence, VC

Soldier. Born Brian Turner Tom Lawrence in Bewdley, Worcestershire. He was a sergeant in the 17th Lancers, Duke of Cambridge's Own.

On 7th August 1900 when on patrol duty, he and a private Hayman were attacked by a number of Boers. Hayman's horse was shot and he was thrown, dislocating his shoulder. Lawrence came to Hayman's assistance and put him on his own horse. He kept the Boers off until Hayman was safely out of range.

For his actions he was awarded the Victoria Cross.
