Trinidadian historian, journalist, socialist and political activist. A pioneering and influential voice in postcolonial literature. Born Cyril Lionel Robert James in Trinidad. An early athlete and teacher, he came to England, Lancashire in 1932 and to London in 1933. His 1963 book 'Beyond a Boundary' is commonly named as the best single book on cricket, and even the best book about sports ever written. Died in London.
