Andrew Behan researched Bainbridge: Clement Spencer Bainbridge was born on 15 November 1896 in Askern, Doncaster, Yorkshire, the youngest of the three children of Joseph Bainbridge and Mary Ann Bainbridge née Spencer. His father was a Woollen Dyer Manager. From 1902 to 1911 he attended Heath Grammar School, Halifax, Yorkshire and the 1911 census shows the family living at 11 Grandsmere Place, Manor Drive, Halifax. From 1911 to 1914 he attended Halifax Technical School and was articled to James Lord, M.Inst.C.E., Borough Engineer and Surveyor, Halifax. From 1914 to 1916 he was appointed as an Assistant Engineer and Surveyor, County Borough of Halifax, on road and sewerage schemes.
In 1916 he enlisted as a Sapper in the Royal Engineers, service number 37330, seeing service in Egypt, Mesopotamia, Kurdistan, India and Russia and was awarded the British War Medal 1914-1918 and the Victory Medal.
From 1919 to 1922 he was the Assistant Surveyor of the Metropolitan Borough of St Pancras and on 20 November 1920 he married Irene Gladys Eastwood at the Parish Church of The Ascension, Balham Hill. The marriage register shows their address as 7 Gaskarth Road, Balham. Electoral registers from 1922 to 1928 show them living at 26 Upsdell Avenue, Palmers Green. On 9 January 1923 he was elected as an Associate Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers. Electoral registers and telephone directories from 1934 to 1941 inform that they were living at 69 Park Drive. London, N.21. Post Office directories confirm that he was in 1940 the Borough Engineer and Surveyor for the Metropolitan Borough of St. Pancras. Electoral registers and telephone directories from 1945 to 1967 show that they were living at 32 Eversley Crescent, London, N.21. Telephone directories from 1970 to 1984 confirm that their address was 3 Wain Close, Little Heath, Potters Bar, Hertfordshire and it was here that his wife died on 14 February 1984. Her estate totalled £69,869. He died, aged 103 years, on 2 April 2003 and his death was registered in North Walsham, Norfolk.
