Group Captain Charles Francis Ambrose, CBE, DFC, AFC, was born on 27 January 1917 at , Plumstead, (subsequently renamed as Durham Rise, London, SE18), the younger child of Albert Francis Leonard Ambrose (1994-1944) and Fanny Anne Ambrose née Wadsworth (1886-1961). His elder sister was Elizabeth Amelia Ambrose (1915-1989) and his father was a 'marker out' at the Royal Carriage Department, Royal Arsenal, Woolwich.
Electoral registers in 1939 show him listed with his family at , London, SE2. In June 1939 he joined the Royal Air Force and our Picture Source shows details of his service. The confirms that for a short time after June 1941, as a Pilot Officer, he was attached to .
In the 1st quarter of 1944 he married Barbara Jean Boothby (1921-1965) in the Bromley registration district.
Telephone directories in 1982 show him listed at , Bramling Hill, Wingham, Littlebourne, Canterbury, Kent, and this address is confirmed in probate records. He died, aged 69 years, on 30 October 1986 and his death was registered in the Aylesbury Vale registration district, Buckinghamshire. Probate was granted on 4 February 1987 and his effects totalled £81,566.
